Google Adwords - Cost-Per-Click (CPC)

A very easy way to advertise is Google Adwords or another CPC based medium. You create an advert that shows up when someone searches a certain word and every time someone clicks on it you pay.

Depending on how popular the word is that you're trying to compete for the more you need to bid to show up in the results. Google is very intelligent in that they don't name a price for a certain word, they make it like an action for the particular keyword. However, just because you're bidding the most, doesn't mean you're going to show up first. Google Adwords determines which ad has the highest probability of being clicked on and puts that ad at the top. This way even if someone is bidding less, they can be first because google will make the most amount of revenue from them being first.

So why can't you do this yourself? We'll the simple answer is you can, nothing is stopping you. However it can be a bit confusing to use and you might manage your ad compaign in a manner that you are paying far more than you need to.
